The warm-up volcano
Tanzania’s second-highest peak — a four-thousand-metre acclimatisation climb inside Arusha National Park. Most guests use Meru as a stunning prelude to Kilimanjaro; a few come only for the buffalo, the colobus, and the sharp summit ridge above the ash cone.
Pricing scales with advertised length and whether you join a scheduled group departure or book a standalone private summit team. Figures update with park fees annually.
Prices are indicative per person, based on standard camping or lodge tier as quoted. Luxury upgrades and single supplements are quoted on enquiry.
| Days on mountain | Group departure | Private party |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $1,180 | $1,700 |
| 4 days | $1,300 | $1,905 |

Both use the same safety standards and crew model — the trade-off is usually budget and dates versus pace, privacy, and flexibility.

Cons
If this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime investment for you, private often protects what you cannot redo — how you feel on the mountain every day.
An indicative plan. Every climb is privately tailored to your party’s pace and acclimatisation profile.
Forest trail past buffalo wallows and black-and-white colobus troops. Gentle grades with big trees and clear streams.
1,500 m → 2,510 m · 10 KM · 4 H
Tonight · Miriakamba — forest hut band.
Heather zone opens toward the saddle — first clear views across the Meru caldera toward Little Meru.
2,510 m → 3,560 m · 6 KM · 4 H
Tonight · Saddle Hut — base for summit bids.
Midnight start on the crater rim ridge. Narrow exposed sections requiring care — not technical, but serious exposure in places. Sunrise over Kilimanjaro from Socialist Peak before the long descent to Miriakamba.
3,560 m → 4,566 m · 13 KM · 12 H
Tonight · Second night at Miriakamba after descent.
Forest descent, transfer to Moshi or Arusha depending on onward plans — often straight into Kilimanjaro briefing.
2,510 m → 1,500 m · 10 KM · 3 H
Tonight · Certificate ceremony at Momella Gate.
