The Coca-Cola Route
The original. The only route with hut accommodation and the same path up and down — well-suited to climbers with limited time, less suited to those seeking the highest summit success.
Pricing scales with advertised length and whether you join a scheduled group departure or book a standalone private summit team. Figures update with park fees annually.
Prices are indicative per person, based on standard camping or lodge tier as quoted. Luxury upgrades and single supplements are quoted on enquiry.
| Days on mountain | Group departure | Private party |

| 5 days | $1,890 | $2,410 |

Both use the same safety standards and crew model — the trade-off is usually budget and dates versus pace, privacy, and flexibility.

If this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime investment for you, private often protects what you cannot redo — how you feel on the mountain every day.
An indicative plan. Every climb is privately tailored to your party’s pace and acclimatisation profile.
A short drive to the gate, then a gentle climb through cloudforest to Mandara Hut. Optional afternoon walk to Maundi Crater for sunset views.
1,860 m → 2,700 m · 8 KM · 4 H
Tonight · Mandara Hut, A-frame wooden cabins.
Out of the forest, into the heath and moorland. Giant lobelias and senecios, with the Mawenzi peaks coming into view.
2,700 m → 3,720 m · 12 KM · 6 H
Tonight · Horombo Hut, the largest camp on the mountain.
A rest and acclimatisation day. We walk up to Zebra Rocks (4,000 m) in the morning and return to sleep at Horombo. This is the day that turns Marangu from "fast" into "wise".
3,720 m (acclimatisation day)
Tonight · Horombo Hut, second night.
Across the alpine desert — stark, lunar, with no plants and very little water. Arrive at Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon. Early dinner, early bed.
3,720 m → 4,720 m · 9 KM · 6 H
Tonight · Kibo Hut, the highest hut. Cold and dry.
Summit night via Gilman’s Point and the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Then the long descent all the way back to Horombo.
4,720 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m · 23 KM · 14 H
Tonight · Horombo Hut, recovery night.
A long descent through forest to the gate. Certificate ceremony, lunch in Moshi.
3,720 m → 1,860 m · 20 KM · 6 H
Tonight · A celebratory dinner at the office.
